Silk thread can be gathered from the webs of a cave spider and woven into cloth at the loom. If your fortress doesn't have cave spiders, then it is easy to buy silk thread and cloth from the dwarven caravan.

Silk cloth is a little more expensive than plant fiber cloth, but both may be needed for a strange mood.

Giant cave spider silk is very expensive, due to the hazards involved. It's also rare because it only occurs in biomes where a lair can exist (mountains/volcanos).

Phantom spider silk is also expensive, mostly because of it's rarity. It usually occurs in terrifying heavily wooded areas of some kind, and in small patches. Note that stripping a heavily wooded area of trees will drive the Phantom spiders out, reducing the amount of webbing present.
