Sterling silver is an alloy of silver and copper. Pure silver is usually considered too soft for craftwork and so it is merged with other metals to improve its strength and durability. Sterling silver currently v0.27.169.33f has no additional benefits over the silver and copper it is made from, as the total value of metal remains the same at 32 units (3*10 and 1*2 -> 4*8) but the resulting Sterling silver cannot be used to produce weapons or armour.
