A map tile is considered subterranean if it is below natural rock or soil. Almost every tunnel dug by your miners will create subterranean tiles. The exception is channels dug from the surface; attaching a subterranean tile to evil light from the surface FOREVER makes the tile become part of the dreaded above ground.

Subterranean is the opposite term for above ground. The terms are used opposingly in dwarf fortress when viewing a tile using the k look at menu. Subterranean and above ground can be combined with light and dark as well as inside and outside.

  • This article is deliberately overstated and theatrical.
  • If anyone knows how to make an above ground tile subterranean, please tell us how.
