Tarn Adams assigns a 4-piece version number to each Dwarf Fortress release. Each number has it's own meaning.

  1. The first number indicates an alpha or beta state, it will be "1" when it is no longer in beta and has gone gold.[1]
  2. The second number is the total number of core components completed.
  3. The third number is the total number of req components completed.
  4. The fourth number is the total number of bloat components completed.
  5. The adjacent letter is increased by one alphabetically for each bug-fix release of a version.

Example

0 . 27 . 176 . 38 c
Currently in alpha/beta
27 core components completed
176 required components completed
38 bloat components completed
A third bug-fix release
