::As of 0.28.181.40d, falling one Z-level may appear to harm you, but it really doesn't.  It will stun you and leave you prone, but I've checked, it's done no damage to me.  2 layers, however, and my legs have snapped like twigs.  Fortunately, as long as I'm not dead, and not in combat, I can just go to overland map, walk one square, and I'm fine again.  --[[User:Smartmo|Smartmo]] 20:56, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

I think it might be a good idea to talk about making adventure mode run faster on this page.  I can run a 6X6 fortress just fine, but for some reason, Adventure mode is slow as Toady's implementation of a UI. [[User:Pi|Pi]]

I wish there would be explained HOW the hell you do that, I already read up from googles search results for "dwarf fortress adventure mode stop bleeding" that fast travel (shift t) won't work as it wants to have the bleeding gone first and sleeping will just let you bleed to death in your sleep.
 
Is it even possible to stop bleeding somehow? I lost already 4 characters in an hour all after a short exploration getting bleeding wounds from stupid 'harmless' wildlife... ~ BloodyRain2k, 2nd April 2011

Okay, having modded in a species with fairly fearsome attacks (Possibly too fearsome. Note to self: Scale back damage slightly) and gone running around in adventure mode, I've noticed that trying to actually use said attacks results in a lot of "you grab the wolf by the left front leg! You release your grip on the wolf's left front leg! You grab the wolf by the right front leg! You release your grip on the wolf's right front leg!" as opposed to ripping them in half or clawing them to shreds. Pressing {{key|c}}, willll bring up combat preferences. The options are 'according to opponent', 'strike', 'charge', and 'close combat'. You want 'strike', 'close combat' is probably what it's been assuming is best 'according to opponent'. --[[User:Navian|Navian]] 16:18, 17 November 2008 (EST)

: The AI bork that would cause this seems logical (A villager commits a crime, another villager attacks it because of the committed crime, but they don't have to code to flag themselves as not comitting a crime- I might add that it's as old as time in RPGs) and Toady should be able to fix it without much trouble, or you can change the ethics in the entity raws around to prevent it. I just noticed recently, while training swimming, that you can drink water that is a body covering. Doesn't matter if the covering results from a dip in a stagnant pool, salty pool or even the ocean (my loc of choice). Once it's on your body, it's drinkable. I know most people consider companions to be meat shields, but I like to get good ones sometimes so that they can actually do damage to the enemy, it's the only way I've been able to play without using throwing or archery. You can see it for yourself, get a companion and bring him/her out to a small river, and have them enter the water, then pull back to prevent them from drowning.After a while, they stop "floundering about" and manage to swim without problems.So yes, I guess companions gain skills just like every character.--[[User:Zoro the Gallade|Zoro the Gallade]] 17:54, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

I've noticed two things in the current version:
 
1. You can shoot and wound enemies with a crossbow while sneaking, without being spotted.
 
2. When throwing objects, it seems like it's a lot more effective when you're not sneaking. When sneaking, the objects mostly seem to miss their intended target. I've found that food is rarely a problem.  It depends a bit on the biome, but generally if you hit 'L' to reveal nearby vermin, you'll always have a viable food supply.  IIRC mountains rarely have vermin (excepting bats swarming around a chasm or something), so you should stock up on beetles and worms before any mountaineering expedition.

Some testing reveals that one's starting equipment is determined solely by the dominant weapon skill. Wrestlers start with no weapon (obviously), no shield, and no armor at all. Bowmen and crossbowmen start with leather armor. Pikemen get chain armor but no shield. Finally, all other weapons (sword, axe, mace, hammer, spear, whip) start with both chain armor and a shield. Is there any way to stack items? If I kill a bowman or a marksdwarf, he'll have about 30 or so arrows stacked together. Yet if I use (read: throw) those arrows, and pick them up again, I end up with 30 extra slots in my inventory.
 
- Note: I tried storing them in a quiver, and that didn't seem to work
