: Fixed "P", here's some news from 38a though: i met a legendary bowman, and she told me off when i asked her to join. No more <s>meat shields</s> companions except for Drunks now. --Digger 23:40, 18 February 2008 (EST)

I think it might be a good idea to talk about making adventure mode run faster on this page.  I can run a 6X6 fortress just fine, but for some reason, Adventure mode is slow as Toady's implementation of a UI. Pi

Stopping Bleeding?
from the wiki page: "... will give you time to stop bleeding ..."

I wish there would be explained HOW the hell you do that, I already read up from googles search results for "dwarf fortress adventure mode stop bleeding" that fast travel (shift t) won't work as it wants to have the bleeding gone first and sleeping will just let you bleed to death in your sleep.

Is it even possible to stop bleeding somehow? I lost already 4 characters in an hour all after a short exploration getting bleeding wounds from stupid 'harmless' wildlife... ~ BloodyRain2k, 2nd April 2011

Is there any way to track down a mayor, short of simply wandering through the dwarf city until I get lucky or starve? --Count Dorku

Can you train your companions to be better? Like maybe getting them to take a swim with you so that they get higher stats? I know most people consider companions to be meat shields, but I like to get good ones sometimes so that they can actually do damage to the enemy, it's the only way I've been able to play without using throwing or archery. I've always just assumed that they got stronger as they fought just like I did, but do they? Shardok 23:11, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

You can see it for yourself, get a companion and bring him/her out to a small river, and have them enter the water, then pull back to prevent them from drowning. After a while, they stop "floundering about" and manage to swim without problems. So yes, I guess companions gain skills just like every character.--Zoro the Gallade 17:54, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

I've found that food is rarely a problem.  It depends a bit on the biome, but generally if you hit 'L' to reveal nearby vermin, you'll always have a viable food supply.  IIRC mountains rarely have vermin (excepting bats swarming around a chasm or something), so you should stock up on beetles and worms before any mountaineering expedition.

:I believe you can only eat live vermin if you're really hungry (i.e. near starving) - otherwise, you'll just respond "No, that's disgusting". --Quietust 22:27, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

Skills and Starting Equipment
Some testing reveals that one's starting equipment is determined solely by the dominant weapon skill. Wrestlers start with no weapon (obviously), no shield, and no armor at all. Bowmen and crossbowmen start with leather armor. Pikemen get chain armor but no shield. Finally, all other weapons (sword, axe, mace, hammer, spear, whip) start with both chain armor and a shield. Points allocated into Armor User or Shield User do not appear to have any effect on the quality of the gear - everything is always of base quality and of the default material (iron for humans, steel for dwarves, wood/rope reed for elves). --Quietust 14:33, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

Survival
The article under survival is unnecessarily informal and could use with some editing.

Elf Civ Leaders
I've confirmed it is possible to find civ-leader Druids as well as city-leader Druids in elven capitals, the question remains as to whether the quests they give out are potentially any different (in my last adventure mode game, I found out with savescumming that both the Mayor-Druid and the King-Druid would send after the same megabeast).--114.78.48.100 15:11, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Also probably worth mentioning here that I've had local and civ elf leaders wander outside the borders of their forest retreat, and turning into migrant tiles on the travel map, resulting in "Ask me when I've returned to m home!" when asking about/returning from a quest, possibly evicting them from town for the rest of history--114.78.48.100 15:19, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Equipping your adventurer
"It should be noted that the world of DF seems to have a lot of left handers, so do not be surprised if your character holds the weapon with the left hand and the shield with the right hand."

Most of the time the shield is held in the dominant hand, so actually, in the world of DF, just like here, most people are right handed.

The Barter System, Only
I frequently encounter shopkeepers who refuse to accept my money and shopkeepers who refuse to part with their own money, though usually not both at the same time.  For the record, that means I can not use one half of the asdfghjkl keys to adjust coins one way or another during Trade.  Is this intentional? --FJH 20:07, 12 March 2010 (UTC)

:I have also experienced this, the best I can come up with (that fits my situation) is that one kingdom won't accept another kingdoms coins. However like coins made from different metals you can trade the coins to the shopkeepers for a pitiful amount of money. So anyone know the real cause?--Codeknight 07:04, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

non-Terrain Over-world Tiles
I have noticed that after after moving you will occasionally see tiles that aren't terrain and instead are dashes (like arrows/bolts) and  the static tile (used by swarms of flies). What exactly are those?

Stacking Items
Is there any way to stack items? If I kill a bowman or a marksdwarf, he'll have about 30 or so arrows stacked together. Yet if I use (read: throw) those arrows, and pick them up again, I end up with 30 extra slots in my inventory.

- Note: I tried storing them in a quiver, and that didn't seem to work
