How many bars does it take to make a bin? Does it depend on what kind of metal? I've gotten canceled messages for "Can't find 2 iron bars" or "can't find 3 platinum bars"...

:: yeah, i limited bins on all stockpiles to what was already there. For a change they now put the bins on furniture piles -empty- but at least 3 of 10 arrived on armor piles and the clutter is gone. ==Bin transfer?==
When making a new stockpile and deleting the previous, the dwarves only decide to move the goods that are not within bins. The new stockpile isn't close to full, and the filled bins sit in the old room without the designation. Is there a (non-tedious) way to make the dwarves move the bins to my new stockpile?

:: I've been struggling with this one myself, still trying to understand it better. It seems to involve mixed bins. I've made a new stockpile to melt a bunch of narrow armors, but I'm having a devil of a time convincing the dwarves to actually move these objects to the intended stockpile. It seems that once they're in a bin in a valid stockpile, they refuse to move it to a new stockpile. Another tactic that also seems to fail is deleting the original stockpile. My current theory is that it has to do with the contents of the bin, if even one item is in the bin that doesn't fit the criteria remains in the bin, they won't move the bin, nor will they take anything out of the bin to fix it. Further testing seems to come up with one method that works, and many methods that do not.
*It seems Dwarves will not take anything from a bin that is not in a stockpile.
*Dwarves will not move a bin into a stockpile unless every object in that bin is permitted in that stockpile.
*the "take from stockpile" seems to fall under the problem of not moving a bin unless the entire bin fits problem again.
*carefully using forbid, seems to permit dwarves to actually remove things from a bin.

Three things that don't really work. What does seem to work, is using the forbid settings in a stockpile. I deleted any stockpile that could possibly complicate things and made one single stockpile to take all of my mixed up bins. In my case, this means ammo/weapons/armor all in one stockpile. All the idle dwarves quickly hopped to the task and the bins were quickly all in one stockpile. Next, I create a new stockpile, for a small test I used a stockpile to take nothing but trap components. Going back to my big mixed up stockpile, I forbid trap components and watch to see what the dwarves do. The effect is immediate. The dwarves once again leap to the task and yank any trap components out of the bins and resort them into the new stockpile. Finally seeing success, I get a bit more selective and create two more stockpiles, one for usable metal armor, one for unusable metal armor. Going back to the mix pile, I forbid all metal armors and wait. The dwarves leap to the task and in minutes I have two neatly sorted stockpiles of metal armor. So there you have it. :As far as I know, the bins are automatically allocated based on how many stockpiles are 'in need of bins'. They usually try to fulfil one stockpiles need for bins before all of the others. ==Magma safe bins==

I've got an armor bin, and my Dwarves keep putting the narrow armor that I want to smelt in there. How do I get the items out, or at the least mark them for smelting. When I try and hit the m ke in the menu, it just marks the bin for melting.--[[User:Destor|Destor]] 01:41, 9 December 2008 (EST)
