So where can one read the rank from? --Koltom 17:28, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

Well, this can be found by viewing a dwarf and going to the general tab. It will show a name and then the stat, i.e. proficient grower, and that shows how skilled they are. Check the

Skills page for more info. Shardok 19:51, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

That would be the skill. He was asking about the rank i guess. --Birthright 22:48, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
Please, explain this profound difference between skill ranks and rank. I would love to hear it. Shardok 04:39, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, the skills and the experience level are clearly displayed as novice, proficient and so on, but i think i have never seen numbers assigned or the term 'rank'. So i was wondering where that comes from, moreso since i don't understand the numbers given in the article. --Koltom 14:41, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
The numbers are a numerical representation of skill rank that start at 5 - Dabbling and go up to 25 - Legendary +5. They are only shown when you're starting a new fortress/adventurer and are assigning skills to them. Unless you use certain mods which also display them (some may also start at 0 for Dabbling instead of 5 like the game does. The game starts at 5 in Dabbling so that it costs 5 points to get Novice, another 6 for the next level, etc. Otherwise it'd be too cheap to get the levels. Shardok 20:18, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh now I get it - you folks have really really decided to consider the cost for buying a level to be the actual level? And it never bothered you that there is no level 0 to 4 then? And that not having a level is level 5? That a dwarf starts every skill at level 5? And that no skill and dabbling, which are clearly 2 different levels, fall toghether in one? And that you pay with money just the amount shown? --Koltom 01:19, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
No. To just about every assumption you're making. Just "no".--Albedo 02:12, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
The levels are shown via *words*. The numbers are just based solely on the amount of experience one requires to get a level up in that skill. i.e. 500 to get from DABBLING to Novice, 600 for the next, etc. No Skill doesn't even *get* mentioned as No skill is no skill, there's no experience required to get from No Skill to Dabbling, so it doesn't even need to be mentioned in the explanation. We use the numerical representations starting at 5 both for the explanation stated here and the explanation astated above by me. It represents both the cost in points and the experience required for a level up. Usually however these numbers aren't used because it's easier just to refer to them by the words and get people used to the words, because 98% of the time while playing Dwarf Fortress you will see the words, unless you're using a mod, in which case you'll see the numbers. Levels 0 to 4 do not exist because they aren't actual "levels" The levels are from No Skill to Legendary +5. The numbers are usually only in articles where it also explains a bit about experience totals or about skill point buying at fortress/adventurer generation. Shardok 08:04, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
