They are heavily responding to fights with corpses even if those have been night trolls or long dead peasant skel like in catacombs or keep dungeons. And after a long time of traveling they indeed get hardened by combat experiences. It expresses e.g. by uttering "grim satisfaction" about having killed a monster or enemy.
