((Verified everything but toys (not in my raws). New smelter built for each item type unless otherwise specified.
+
((Verified amulets. Built new smelter, melted amulets until bar returned. Number: 10.))

+
((Verified bracelets. Built new smelter, melted bracelets until bar returned. Number: 10.))
0.1 bars: Melted single items until one bar returned.

0.2 bars: Melted 10 items, observed bar return at 5th and 10th item melted.

0.5 bars: Melted 10 of each item, received 5 bars from each.

1 bar: Melted 10 of each, counted bars in smelter at end of run. Some of these were done in batches.

1.2 bars: Melted 9 of each item, confirmed partial bar in smelter by melting 0.1-return item until full bar returned.

1.5 bars: Melted 10 of each item, received 15 bars.))

I removed this text from the article:

*If a smelter is in a burrow and the items to be melted are not in the same burrow, then the items will not be melted. This is true even if the dwarves are not currently being restricted to burrows. At least in 40.24.

Presumably you accidentally enabled burrow workshop restrictions on your burrow (by pressing w twice). Burrow workshop restrictions are a "feature" that prevents workshops in the burrow from using items outside the burrow exactly as you noted. I verified melting works without workshop restrictions and fails with them (as expected) in v0.42.05.--Loci (talk) 20:31, 22 January 2016 (UTC)

Can you melt items made up of metal ore? 2601:644:2:B64B:FD7A:8297:B4E7:23C 06:02, 16 January 2017 (UTC)

: No. You can only melt ~metal~ items, and items made from stone (including ore) are not "metal". Albedo (talk) 04:35, 23 March 2020 (UTC)
