Gem cutters can cut not only gems proper, but regular stone and glass as well. Although cut stone is next to worthless, it still provides experience points, and can be used to keep a jeweler busy while you mine out a fresh batch of gems. It is also the only way to decorate with stone, and an easy way to create windows without fuel or sand. However, with a magma and a sand source, raw green glass can be mass-produced, which is worth the exact same as the cheapest gems.

The v50 Jeweler's Workshop comes with a general "Cut Gem" job that by default will use any rough gem a jeweler can find. After the job has been created the gem type can be specified by modifying the job, in the Premium version this can be done by clicking on the magnifying glass icon and selecting the rough gem type here. DFHack is no longer needed for proper automation of gem cutting. On the other hand, it will be more difficult to cut anything but a specific type of gem, most often rock crystal, which is needed for crystal glass production. The easiest way to do this is to use a linked stockpile that does not accept the gem type you want to preserve.
