Skills don't increase in terms of levels, but in terms of points. If you do some training in adventure mode and take a gander at your personal status, you'll note that each skill level takes a certain number of points in the hundreds. It's possible it's stored cumulatively (i.e., 635 points in shield user on the back end would be displayed as 135 points into "Novice Shield User" on the front end) although I haven't confirmed that; if so, then Toady would probably consider it possible (however unlikely) for someone to increase a single skill by more than 65,535 points total, and a 4-byte integer is the next larger power of 2 bytes.
