A Bogeyman is a creature of the night who attacks unwary adventurers who sleep or travel at night.

When you are ambushed, you will get the message:

You are surrounded by incessant cackling

And will receive the message:

You are still surrounded by cackling

If you try to travel or sleep/rest while you're still being attacked. If you buffed agility enough during character creation, you may be able to run away from them. However, no matter where you run, they may spawn near you endlessly and attack you. The only way to stop their attacks is by running through a critical distance somewhere near a town/hamlet[Verify], or by killing them all. After they're gone, you'll get the message:
