Some items come in stacks. Items like crossbow Template:L, Template:L, and Template:L are examples of stacks of solid objects. Template:L is the most often encountered stack of a liquid item.
You can tell its a stack because the item name has a number in brackets next to it. For example, "Iron bolts[20]" is a stack of iron crossbow bolts. A dwarf can pick up the entire stack and carry it, or a marksdwarf can remove a single bolt from the stack and fire it.
For stacks of food or booze, a dwarf will eat and/or drink a single unit of food and/or booze at a sitting.
