What's the source for "rats eat bones and shells."

My source was personal observation. According to my comment on the bugtracker for "Shells disappear from inside underground stockpiles (being gnawed by vermin?)" Bug:1081, I first noticed this behavior in 31.11, but I've also seen it in the current version, 31.25. --Cali 02:45, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Per Toady One, the actual [GNAWER] tag "gives small animals a chance to break their way out of captivity in cages of certain materials." Bognor 04:10, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
I actually wasn't the one who placed the bug report, I just added my experience in the comments. I have no idea which creature token is connected to this behavior, but I do know that on multiple occasions, I watched as a rat entered a space containing a stockpiled bone or shell, then left an empty space behind it. --Cali 06:55, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
