This article is about the current version of DF.
Note that some content may still need to be updated.

Unconscious Status unconscious icon.png is the state wherein a creature is unable to move, act, or perceive sight or sound. It is noted as Unconscious in the Overview screen of a selected creature, but does not appear as a health problem in the Health -> Status screen.

Creatures that are sleeping are unconscious, though being unconscious is different from performing the rest action as dwarves that are unconscious will not heal from their injuries. Syndromes can also cause periodic unconsciousness as one of their symptoms, and creatures caught in the dust of a cave-in are momentarily knocked unconscious.

Creatures may fall unconscious during combat, most often due to the extreme pain of sustained injuries whereupon the creature gives in to pain. Attacks that damage a creature's bones are highly likely to cause it to fall unconscious in this way due to the high amount of pain that bone fractures cause. The amount of pain required to knock out a creature is based on its toughness attribute.

Any unconscious creature can be caught in a trap, including creatures that are normally immune to them. This includes the player's own dwarves in fortress mode, who might decide to take a nap they won't wake up from on a tile with 10 giant axe blades.

If a dwarf is stuck in a state of endless unconsciousness, they can still be awoken by expelling them.[Verify]
