Next was my meeting with the human merchant guild leader, which went well.  Immediately after the meeting I was approached with news of goblins on the horizon.  I went to look myself and attempted to gauge the enemy force.  The force seemed quite small at first, but seemed to grow as they grew nearer.  The final tally was 6 wrestlers, 11 spearmen, and one beak dog and they seemed to be preparing for a siege.  I ordered the dwarves inside and our marksdwarves to their guard post above the entrance.  The goblins approached over the mountain and as they approached I heard news of our marksdwarves striking them down as they approached. This news took me by surprise as the fortifications on their guard post did not face the direction of the goblins' approach.  I went up to look for myself and saw that the post had no roof!  For this siege that seemed to be a good thing, since it allowed them to fire where they could not have ordinarily, but I will have to redesign the post for future sieges.  Two spearmen had fallen by the time the goblins reached the gates where they were attacked by the war dogs chained there.  Four of the dogs were killed, but the marksdwaves continued to fire and the gates were opened to allow our macedwarves into the fight.  The humans joined in as well and in the end we ended up killing four wrestlers, four speargoblins, and the beakdog before the remaining goblins retreated.  Our only losses were the guard dogs.  This first siege experience was unexpected, mainly because I had forgotten about the danger of goblins, but future sieges will not go as well for the goblins.
