Does this topic deserve it's own page? Would it be better rolled into another page, such as Wall or more generically Construction? If not, how can we improve it's quality? --Raveturned 10:33, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

I think this still applies to the current version (the "suspended construction" method still works, at least). While dwarves no longer wall themselves in, they can still wall themselves out without intervention. For example:

<diagram>

[#3:0][%178][%178][%178][%178][%178][%178]

[%178][%178][%178][%178][%178][%178]

[#]+[#2:1]+[@6:0][#0:0]O[@][#4:1]+[#3:0][%178][%178]

[#3:0][%178][%178][%178][%178][%178][%178]

[%178][%178][%178][%178][%178][%178]

</diagram>

In situations like this, I've had dwarves decide to build walls from the red floor instead of the green floor, which presumably isn't considered "walled in" by the game, but still isolates the dwarf from the rest of the fortress. (This can also occur when walling off a fortress entrance – a dwarf can be walled out of the fortress if they construct the last section of wall from the outside.) —Lethosor (talk) 19:25, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

:The dwarf AI handling constructions was rewritten for this version, and this page was never updated. Dwarves will stand in a planned construction's tile (otherwise the "Creature occupying site" error wouldn't ever occur). The example for the diagonal method is problematic since dwarves no longer wall themselves in. The only way I could see your example happening is if the dwarf was outside the fortress when you ordered the wall. The damp walls stuff is current, and I moved it over to wall. There are ways to build walls from a particular direction in this version--but pretty much everything on this page is outdated and in need of deletion.--Loci (talk) 19:43, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

::Hmm, that's interesting. I'm pretty sure I've had that method work before, but maybe it wasn't actually necessary. I did go ahead and remove the "diagonal method" section, however, since it's clearly outdated. The "creature occupying site" error isn't due to a disregard for designations – it happens when a creature doesn't approach the wall from a tile where the wall could be built from (e.g. from a ramp below), and falls back to building from the wall's position (and then remembers that position when trying to build the wall again, making it necessary to re-designate the wall). —Lethosor (talk) 21:22, 9 June 2014 (UTC)

::A quick test (surrounding a single wall with suspended walls except for one side) shows that this method doesn't work any more, so I'll remove it and re-add the deletion tag. —Lethosor (talk) 21:25, 9 June 2014 (UTC)
