Dwarves are not the only ones that can name items, nor is it restricted to actual weapons. [http://i.imgur.com/fftV2.png a named bucket] and [http://i.imgur.com/ozJ3S.png a named shoe], both wielded by demons that have been terrorizing the wildlife and invading goblins for about two years now. There was no announcement like when a dwarf names his weapon, but they both appear in blue on the artifacts list.
