Workshops are the general area where work gets done. They can be built from almost any material, from the build->workshop menu. To start a task at a workshop, press q and move the cursor near to it.
The most important workshops are probably the mason's workshop and the carpenter's workshop. The mason's workshop can build stone items like doors, tables, and chairs. The carpenter's workshop can build wooden items such as beds, buckets, and barrels.
