The siege is over. We lost six fine dwarves, although fairly stupid ones. See what happens when you cant follow orders? This devastating siege has prompted the construction of a guard tower and the training of a five man marksdwarf squad. The good news is out of the original fourty-eight, only elven managed to escape. I pray for some migrants as I do not have any good recruits for the marksdwarf squad. | The siege is over. We lost six fine dwarves, although fairly stupid ones. From the journal of Lux782, Slaughterer of Bloodline:Oceanside:
End of year save: [1]
Granite, 205[edit]
1st Granite, 205 Today is the big day I guess. No more mucking around with flesh, skin, and bones. I just noticed that since I moved to Oceanside I have been doing nothing other then slaughtering animals and sleeping. As I walk around the fortress I now have control over I notice that I have no clue were anything is. The place is an absolute mess. Why I was just checking out one of the craftsdwarf workshops and it is cluttered with so many skull totems and bone bolts that I have no clue how anyone could actually work there! It’s like for the past four years our haulers have been doing nothing. What the hell have I gotten myself into… I cant even get a decent drink, I hate dwarven wine.
7th Granite, 205 Its only the 7th day of my leadership and I have already caused the death of two dwarves. The first is hmxmoss, the second a child of an elite fortress guard. I took it upon myself to speak personally to their loved ones and jdarksun took it very hard. I never knew how dangerous the construction platform was. While removing some flooring to setup some screw pumps a cave-in occurred. The two drowned shortly after.
14th Granite, 205 A group of goblins have set siege to our fortress. For now I have ordered all non-military dwarves inside and scouts state that the goblins, a small band of around twelve, are chasing a group of elven traders.
15th Granite, 205 Three of my champions have decided it would be a good idea to charge the goblins. I have been forced to send backup, I can’t lose three of them.
16th Granite, 205 One of the champions has fallen which appears to have inspired the other two. All twelve of the goblins have been defeated, if only Tekkud had been more patient I believe this battle would have been a clean sweep.
21st Granite, 205 I have spoken to the loved ones of Tekkud and it wasn’t easy but they were proud of his bravery. They found it comforting to know that before going he was able to take 4 of the goblins with him and in doing so kept his two friends just behind them from receiving any injury. Despite only ruling for twenty one days three dwarves have already died. I fear I may have angered a god.
Slate, 205[edit]
10th Slate, 205 Things seems to be going well this month. I have started to extend the development platform out more. My goal is to start pumping water out from below the csurface level. If I can hit the bottom of the ocean just three units down I can really start to expand. I have also ordered my miners to start searching for magma. If I can drop a large amount of magma on the water I may be able to dig down and then build within the dammed area. It’s a long shot but in the end it may be less work.
19th Slate, 205 Andrew Ryan has demanded the production of bolts. As if this wasn’t enough some nobles have come, a tax collector, hammerer, baron, and baroness consort. I need to start creating some nice bedrooms and offices for them, the ones currently available are hardly fit for a noble.
23rd Slate, 205 Lumber is so hard to come by I don’t know what to do…
Felsite, 205[edit]
24th Felsite, 205 I have given out new tasks to all my dwarves. Previously dwarves would do whatever they want but not on my watch. I have tasked each dwarf with a special set of skills. This should speed up the work within the fort. Construction of noble rooms seems to be going well however our engravers are slow. Smoothing the stones to a nice finish should give them plenty of experience. I don’t want any crappy engravings on these walls.
Hematite, 205[edit]
25 Hematite, 205 I am having a lot of trouble with the development platform. Attempting to bring water up and out is proving to be much more difficult then expected. I have a new idea that I hope works.
Malachite, 205[edit]
20th Malachite, 205 Great News! Athelbal the speardwarf has given birth to a baby girl. If that wasn’t enough Kegetherith the farm worker has given birth to a boy! I hear they already have beards as well. I hope this reverses the trend of people dying. Starting off with three deaths just isn’t good.
Limestone, 205[edit]
14th Limestone, 205 Another Goblin siege. I hope this time a lone champion doesn’t charge out. This time there are just too many crossbow goblins for a charge to do anything. I think the best coarse of action may be to let them come inside the barracks and ambush them. This could go all so horribly wrong, actually this will go horribly wrong. There are currently 48 of them including an elite bowman, mace lord, pikemaster, and a ton of wrestlers. I fear for my army of 26. I pray the traps work. Compared to the first siege of 12 this is…
17th Limestone, 205 If the siege wasn’t enough a kobold figured it would take advantage of the situation. I was forced to let it go in fear that, once seeing the goblin force, the dwarf sent to kill the kobold would become enraged and attack without thinking.
19th Limestone, 205 They are at our doorstep. I plan to let a group in and shut the bridge on them. My heart is pounding so hard I can no longer hear the sounds of the workshops. I pray for success…
20th Limestone, 205 Despite orders to never go outside some have deemed it wise to charge the group of 14 crossbow goblins. Thikutsavot the wrestler, wavecutter the spear wielder, Esmulingiz Fashcerol Urist the crossbow wielder, Gadantulon Akamanir Aban the wrestler, Sholidzuglar the wrestler, and Vucarokir Sheddatur Vush the spear wielder have died. I am down to eighteen champions, two general military dwarves while the goblins are now at eleven units. Luckily we have slain their mace lord, and pikemaster. It seems the elite bowman has fled in fear, I suspect he will return at a later date.
22nd Limestone, 205 The siege is over.
27th Limestone, 205 Clean up after the siege is going well. Despite the deaths most dwarves appear to be in good spirits. One of our haulers was taken by a fey mood and has claimed a carpenters workshop.
Sandstone, 205[edit]
5th Sandstone, 205 Our fey dwarf has created a chair! Named The Honesty of Shadow the chair is encircled with bands of Ash Chestnut and Magnetite. It menaces with spikes of Peridot. On the item is an image of a fly in Oak. Quite the chair and it will make a noble very happy.
11th Sandstone, 205 The four nobles that came earlier this year are now happy. I have setup of rooms that take care of their needs. I have been working our engravers hard trying to get them in tip top shape for some engraving.
23rd Sandstone, 205 Today was the day to test the construction of the development platform. It failed. The pressure from the water on the surface is too much for the pumps to handle. They are unable to pump fast enough to get dwarves down into the thick of it and start building. I have come to the conclusion that the only possible way to hit bedrock would be with magma.
24th Sandstone, 205 Finally a dwarf managed to shut off the pumps. I don’t know how long it is going to take for this massive surge of water to evaporate but… my hopes of a glass fortress under the sea are slowly fading.
26th Sandstone, 205 Water has made its way into the fortress. Luckily it isn’t a lot but it will cause some problems.
Timber, 205[edit]
5th Timber, 205 I fear I have made a horrible mistake. The ocean itself seems to be draining. I do not know how or why, I just know it has dropped drastically over the past few days. I pray this is not some form of punishment by Swimsubmerge the Crab of Drinks. From what the tax collector Ningsigun has been preaching recently, we have upset this deity of coasts and lakes. I pray she does not drain our ocean for if the ocean isn’t there then how are we to build a glass fortress within it?
9th Timber, 205 In order to calm the wrath of Swimsubmerge the Crab of Drinks I have drowned a dwarf in the sea. I will regret this but it would seem since the sacrifice the water levels have risen. I pray Swimsubmerge the Crab of Drinks doesn’t desire any more dwarven blood.
15th Timber, 205 I have stopped all farming, food is going bad left and right. We need to sort out the stockpiles; hell I don’t even know where the stockpiles are. It’s been months now and I still get lost.
18th Timber, 205 Construction of the marksdwarf guard tower has begun. It is by no means a wonderful tower but it should do nicely.
Moonstone, 205[edit]
2nd Moonstone, 205 Our engraver has drawn images of the recent siege dubbed The Cremated Onslaught as well as images of the siege earlier in the year dubbed The Fierce Siege.
24th Moonstone, 205 Still no migrates, I am beginning to worry that, due to my leadership, dwarves have decided Oceanside is not the right place to live and work. Some kobold thieves have been trying to steal some of our equipment lately. I have setup some guards outside to stop them.
Obsidian, 205[edit]
2nd Obsidian, 205 Well, it seems the tax collectors room is nearly fully complete. I doubt he will ever need a grand bedroom or dining room or mausoleum or opulent throne room but hes got them. It was good practice for my engraver dwarves to hone their skill while making a noble happy. I think the hammerer will be the next one to receive special treatment.
22nd Obsidian, 205 One of the Brewmaster’s apprentices has withdrawn from society and claimed a craftsdwarf workshop. He is taking quite the number of items, three logs, a shell, 2 wax opals, some jaguar leather, and some bones. I look forward to this object bring created.
28th Obsidian, 205 Well the artifact has been completed, an Ashen Bracelet. You would think a bracelet could be made out of a single log, considering one log can make a bed. Anyway it is named Crestedconfined the Equal Spears. It is decorated with jaguar leather and encircled with bands of wax opal. It menaces with spikes of Ash, Alder, turtleshell, and wax opal. On the item is an image of Stylebasis the Chalk idol in ash. On the item is an image of circles in rhesus macaque bone. It is rather amusing that an artifact is references an older artifact.
29th Obsidian, 205 So ends my turn at constructing Oceanside. Infact I am not ever sure I have done anything. Two failed construction plans, ten deaths, a miasma problem and tons of parties for no reason, no large amount of created wealth, a lack of decent alcohol… I guess all I will be remembered for is the literal ton of food I produced. I think it is time for me to retire and rest. Nothing quite beats killing some kittens or puppies for their meat and bones.
