There is a ghost in my fortress (restless haunt from a merchant who fell into a river) who appears to be claiming coffins on his own and automatically designating a room from them.  If I free the tomb, he instantly makes another into a room.  Don't really have a problem with this, except that I think it's giving my baron the "was utterly traumatized by a lesser's pretentious burial arrangements" thought.  Anybody else have this issue? --[[User:Octorok|Octorok]] 00:40, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

I have had this issue many times. You have to put the spirit to rest before you can reclaim the tomb for burial. --[[Special:Contributions/38.115.135.30|38.115.135.30]] 19:29, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

I've had at least one dwarf turn into a ghost after a failed mood. I believe he was gibbering, rather than melancholy - but the noisiness would certainly make thematic sense for a moaning ghost! Also, 'restless' appears to be the generic 'unappeased spirit'-type ghost - they weren't particularly unhappy in life, but they're pissed that they haven't been buried or memorialized. Lost Coffins[edit]

If for instance I was to accidentally drop a coffin into a volcano could I end up getting a ghost from said dead dwarf or is it all good so long as they where buried once?--70.74.162.60 03:58, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Scared to death[edit]

Can ghosts still scare people to death? I generally don't leave corpses around to find out ;)

-yes they do. Had my first incident with a ghost yesterday and a dwarf got scared to death. (31.18)

-Yes, while it is rare, ghostly dwarves can scare other dwarves to death just by being seen by them, usually sighting just cause unhappy thoughts.

besides: He wasn't called a murderous Ghost or anything like that. Just "ghostly hunter" (hunting was his profession in life). -Zaibusa

  • <ghost> is throwing objects around the fortress!
  • <ghost> can be heard howling throughout the fortress!

I would love to read here, what ghosts actually DO! Do they harm our dorfs, are they just annoying? Please add to it :) --Lesconrads 17:21, 1 December 2010 (UTC)

Ghost Types[edit]

I had a dwarf go insane after a mood, melancholy to be specific. He can back as a moaning spirit. Has anyone noticed Melancholy dwarfs turning into moaning ghosts? Possible that's one cause for that kind of ghost. Thematically it would make sense.--Khelek 04:43, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Babies won't become ghosts[edit]

A child and a baby died in my danger room (!!SCIENCE!!). The child came back as a ghost, while the baby stayed dead. --Blur 10:29, 27 December 2010 (UTC)

Moaning Spirits[edit]

To make it even better(⸮), I had just started this fortress (there's a ghost in it because I reclaimed tunnels) and I have only one mason... the dwarf that is running around a room. No memorial for a while. 70.132.3.212 05:30, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Turn ghosts off[edit]

Does anybody know if there is a way to turn off ghosts? --JamesK89 05:58, 17 July 2011 (UTC)

Presumably, adding the tag [CANNOT_UNDEAD] to the dwarf raws will stop ghosts (since they are listed under [UNDEAD]). I have not tested this.

Ghosts performing jobs[edit]

One of my recently recovered dwarves was diagnosed by a Ghostly Diagnostician. Does anyone else have any proof that Ghosts can still do jobs after death? I found this so strange/hilarious when I looked at the recovered dwarf's Medical History.

Are you sure that it wasn't the case instead that they were diagnosed by a diagnostician who later died and became a ghost? That would leave that same kind of message on the treatment history page.98.203.173.56 06:59, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
