Name requirements?[edit]

What is the name system that causes these to be generated? I got these and they absolutely raped my dwarves. The lucky part is that I'd had my first immigrant wave, about 20 of them, and the little bastards really only got a few dogs/cats, two children, and...urm...Oh, wait, they got three dwarves, too.

They're as bad as carp (which were not in that river).

I think there were olms too, as well as some other fish; namely, pike. Yes, I got the dynamite duo of slightly-less-famous-than-carp serial killers.

Really, though, I ended up 'solving' the problem pretty soon afterwards; and by solve, I mean 'use a channel I was already building to dam the river long enough to dam it with floodgates then channel out the built-up obsidian and restore controlled flow.'

Basically, the score is now Midna: 1, fish: 0. Playing on a lava map means that one can generally eliminate most naturally-caused water-based problems quickly and easily; but it also means that you deal with the magma's inhabitants and the ever-growing temptation to do something rash with your newfound power.

All in all, it went well. But bringing myself back to the point, how exactly are the names for gar generation picked? And what triggers their (the gar's) generation? That is, specifically, what portion of the name triggers it, or what formula, etcetera.

I still have the save, too... I think. ~ Midna 00:04, 29 October 2008 (EDT)

Wild animals and other unnamed creatures receive a name once they've killed something. (I'm not sure if the kill has to be one of your dwarves/pets.) I've also seen an announcement about creatures getting "awarded" a name (this happened with a zombie batman after several years of it being continuously on the map -- the dwarves would just run away from it). I believe I also had a "named" tiger on the map at the beginning of the game. Any of this match what you're asking about?--Maximus 00:35, 29 October 2008 (EDT)
I think things that attack dwarf caravans get names too and might not tell you about it. One time the caravan picked the most absolutely monster-choked vicinity of the chasm to leave through, and named at least six batmen on the way out. --Corona688 15:24, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Gar Cage?[edit]

I have a longnose gar, in a cage. Not a terrarium, a cage, nickel. It has survived many seasons now. Do fish go into stasis when in cages or something? --Corona688 15:24, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes. Yes they do. Anything that isn't one of your dwarves will go into stasis. --Zchris13 00:10, 22 May 2009 (UTC)
