Excerpts from the log of jdarskun, smithy of Bloodline:Oceanside.
Early Spring[edit]
It's almost as if I've been here before... but no. This place is new, fresh... and yet oddly familiar. I wonder if Andrew Ryan, our visionary has that effect on everyone. It certainly seems as if he has Ushrir's blessing, being chosen to start this amazing endeavor. As the miners struck the earth, I felt hope rise within my breast. Perhaps this would be the place where dwarves were free from tyranny forever.
Addendum
...no one brought an ax. We can't chop down trees. We'll be forced to sleep in the dirt until a caravan arrives.
Early Summer[edit]
Blast! The miners keep finding damp walls... even far, far below where any aquifer should be. I am tempted to simply break down one of these damp walls, to see what lay on the other side. Perhaps if they dug to the very bottom...
Mid Summer[edit]
I can't believe our fortune. While digging exploratory shafts along the base of the ocean, we found a vein of native platinum.
Early Autumn[edit]
The caravan has arrived... and so has our first thief. The dogs chased it through the surf, eventually running it down. The second thief had the misfortune to run into Ryan... who strangled it on the beach.
Mid Autumn[edit]
The herald of the migrants was a thief, which I brought down... with the help of hmxmoss' dogs. The migrants included a stoneworker, engraver, butcher, potash maker, lye maker, wood burner, and a peasant. They were all immediately put to work.
Mid Winter[edit]
Our butcher, Ast Shammancog, was struck down by a mighty wolf today. Prior to this, we had only seen groundhogs... how the wolf slipped by his crossbow and locked on to the poor dwarf's throat, I'll never know. We'll bury him as close to the heart of the earth as we can.
Early Spring[edit]
Our first year here draws to a close, and I reflect on our progress... which is, sadly, low. The focus has been almost entirely on support infrastructure.
- We completed a Trade Depot and built some walls for fortification around the main entrance. A small drawbridge can be raised to secure us inside.
- Our storehouse is large and well stocked, but not yet optimized. It's currently functional, and we have plenty of food and drink coming from our farms and what hmxmoss harvested before I made him an ax.
- Several ore-rich veins have been found while digging exploratory shafts around the ocean floor. This includes raw platinum and an absolutely huge magnetite vein. We're almost literally swimming in iron.
- A decently large dining room and sculpture garden has been laid out, though the rooms themselves need smoothing and engraving. Andrew Ryan has a nice, if modest, office where he takes care of the bookkeeping. No barracks as of yet.
- The habitat complex is... well, politely put, sprawling. This area is riddled with pockets of water, so we were unable to fix a single location. Until Ryan finally ordered that the apartments be built as low as we dared.
- Which, coincidentally, is also next to the Hall of Heroes... our graveyard.
