Dwarven tanners have a skill unknown to mere humans in that they can make the softest skin of the tiniest animal equally hardy as that of the most heavily protected live creature. Whether they make flimsy skin into a rock-like substance, or tough hide silky and supple, remains a mystery.

Leather armor is made in a {{L|leather works}}, and requires one unit of any leather. Leather armor will be worn by civilians with the {{L|hunting}} labor enabled, or by {{L|military}} dwarves with at least leather armor enabled. Dwarves instructed to wear chain and plate armor will still wear leather if chain and plate armor are unavailable. Leather is significantly lighter than other forms of armor, and thus is less likely to cause {{L|encumbrance}} penalties, but also provides less protection. The source animal of the leather (dragon, cat, etc.) does not alter the weight or protection of the armor, though the {{L|item quality}} does.

Revision as of 21:27, 7 June 2010

This article is about an older version of DF.

Leather is the tanned hide of an Template:L, and is a fairly versatile material. Leather can be used to make Template:Ls, Template:Ls, Template:Ls, Template:L, Template:Ls, Template:L and Template:L at a Template:L. It can also be used to Template:L items with leather. Leather Template:L can only be made at a Template:L.

The Leather Industry

Because it only overlaps in the use of end products, the leather industry is part of the Template:L, not the Template:L.

Making leather requires a Template:L, a raw hide or Template:L from an animal, and a dwarf with the 'Template:L' skill turned on. Rotten hides or skin cannot be tanned. The Template:L and dwarven Template:Ls usually sell various boxes of leather, which can be useful if few butcherable animals inhabit the map. One unrotten hide yields one "unit" of leather - regardless of the animal being a Template:L or an Template:L. The Template:L of the leather depends on the critter it comes from; leather made from the skins of rare or dangerous animals can be quite Template:L.

Dwarven tanners have a skill unknown to mere humans in that they can make the softest skin of the tiniest animal equally hardy as that of the most heavily protected live creature. Whether they make flimsy skin into a rock-like substance, or tough hide silky and supple, remains a mystery.

Leather armor

Leather armor is made in a Template:L, and requires one unit of any leather. Leather armor will be worn by civilians with the Template:L labor enabled, or by Template:L dwarves with at least leather armor enabled. Dwarves instructed to wear chain and plate armor will still wear leather if chain and plate armor are unavailable. Leather is significantly lighter than other forms of armor, and thus is less likely to cause Template:L penalties, but also provides less protection. The source animal of the leather (dragon, cat, etc.) does not alter the weight or protection of the armor, though the Template:L does.

Chitin

Template:Ls and Template:Ls do have skins and instead of leather provide Template:L. Chitin is processed and treated as leather in all ways.
