Trees may leave rock floor when cut thus preventing further tree growth. This happens at least on muddied underground floor and on soil with rock underneath. Thus sustainable tree farms require regular irrigation. A good way seems to keep the farm submerged in water 2-3 levels deep. This still allows trees to grow and dwarves to harvest. | Trees may leave rock floor when cut thus preventing further tree growth. Underground tree farming doesn't seem to work the way it used to. Saplings in a mined-out area 1 z-level tall eventually die with no room to grow. I tried channeling instead to create some spaces with some overhead room. In a room with only 2 z-levels available, I eventually got 2 tower caps to grow into cuttable trees. Immediately after maturing, the trees yielded 1-2 logs. I imagine further growth is possible, but have yet to confirm; it's possible the restrictive ceiling will still eventually kill the tree. --Jaygengelbach (talk) 04:59, 4 September 2014 (UTC)

Given the major changes to trees from v. .34 to v. .40, this article really deserves a complete rewrite. Therefore I'm sticking the bot-removed "migrated article" tag back in. Urist McDorf (talk) 15:49, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
