Exporting is when goods your dwarves have made or captured are traded to the outside world via caravan trade, in exchange for the goods offered by the caravans. Any object your dwarves make can be traded (except legendary artifacts[Verify]), but it is obviously sensible to trade out useless crafts, made in bulk stone and captured clothes and weapons your dwarves can't wear.
The total value of exported goods can be seen on the status screen, if you have a broker with novice or better in the appraiser skill. Exporting a large value of goods is believed to attract larger caravans in future.
Trade representatives will negotiate export agreements with your mayor. When the caravan returns the following year, they will pay a higher price for the requested goods.
