A bedroom is a room defined from a bed. A dwarf will usually store their belongings in their bedroom when not carrying them. A dwarf will claim an unassigned bedroom after sleeping in it, but they can be manually assigned. Married dwarves will share a bedroom, even sleeping in the same bed; babies will also share a bedroom with their mother until they grow into children.

To set up a bedroom, you must first make a bed in a carpenter's workshop, then build it. (Dwarves will not sleep in beds which have been produced in a workshop until they are placed via the build menu). Once the bed is built, to turn it into a bedroom, you must query the bed and make a bedroom out of it.

Dwarves will sleep in any bed once it has been built, and heal from wounds faster in beds which are not part of any room designation. However, turning a bed into a bedroom makes all other pieces of furniture in the room (such as cabinets and coffers) usable by the dwarf that owns the bedroom. Owning furniture (especially high-quality furniture) gives dwarves happy thoughts, and cabinets and coffers give them a place to store their possessions. Sophisticated bedroom designs have been known to give players of Dwarf Fortress happy thoughts as well.

Once the dwarven economy starts, dwarves will get unhappy thoughts from not having a chest in their bedroom.

Military dwarves will be sleeping in barracks instead of bedrooms if told to do so in their squad's settings. Bedroom-less dwarves will be sleeping in barracks too if they have the option. If there is no alternative avaible, those dwarves will sleep in a bed that is not defined as a bedroom.

It is best to place bedrooms far from workshops and other work areas due to noise.

The option 'free bed' removes the status 'room' from a bed.

Although the room-designation tool appears to not include doors, dwarves will receive unique happy thoughts for "their own <quality> door," as well as any other well-crafted doors which they pass through.
