v0.34 Talk:Children
I Can't comfirm this. I had a baby die of thirst a few months after her mother died trying to save it from a goblin. Nobody seems to care for the orphaned babies.
- Give Water is not a high-priority task. As with hospitalized patients, orphaned babies can die of thirst if all your dwarves are too busy hauling socks. In a fort that's large, or busy, or has a high patient(+orphan) load, consider having one or two nurse-dorfs with all labors but "Feed Patients and Prisoners" turned off. There's still the difference that hospitalised dwarfs practically never die of neglect, and babies and prisoners almost always. It seems that the game assigns care labours for those in a different way - and usually fails at generating the job at all. – unsigned comment by 91.66.179.15
Proposed move to DF2012:Child
Reason: Rule N suggests that concepts should always be singular (child) unless always plural (not the case here).
As this is a higher-risk move, I believe it would be constructive to agree on it before completing the move. As with the move of arena, one issue that needs to be resolved is what to do with the other namespaces. My opinion is that they should too have the pages moved, as the Rule N applies to them as well.
In addition, DF2012:Child should probably be vacated for the move to properly occur (while preserving the edit history). --Dree12 (talk) 03:48, 17 May 2012 (UTC)
Children planting seeds
Fort-born children never do that. Immigrant children may, however - as i understand it, immigrants get all the labours activated for which they have novice or better skill, which means children from older forts tend to immigrate with the grower (and possibly stone-/wood-/bonecrafter, if they mooded in the old fort) labour activated. Since children's labours cannot be interacted with, it's impossible to switch the labour off, but that's all the child status really does - the child will do the proper 'active' jobs of its labours, like plant seeds (or make wooden bolts, if a woodcrafter). I suggest we permanently leave the 'children plant seeds' out, because it only sporadically occurs, and only due to a possible bug. Children also can get the job 'dump item', but that doesn't mean they'll really haul refuse, the job only occurs if a barrel is marked for dumping while a child is drinking from it. – unsigned comment by 91.66.179.15
Bug marked as resolved
Should the page be updated to show the bug is no longer current? -- 81.156.53.204 09:33, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, and I have done so. However, feel free to update and correct the wiki yourself if you see any other outdated or incorrect information. Thanks. -- HiEv 22:57, 1 July 2012 (UTC)
Fill Pond?
Has anyone ever seen a child filling a pond? That note (as well as the rest of the page) was copied from v0.31:Children, and there were questions about it in the v0.31 Talk page. Urist McDorf 02:26, 29 August 2012 (UTC)
Sleeping with parents
In DF2012, I just observed two children sleeping in a bed with their father. It's my assumption that his third child would have as well if I hadn't specifically assigned that child a room in a burrow (I'm using DT to assign certain labors I feel make sense to children, farming including - and I have my child farmers restricted to a burrow with their assigned bedrooms and personal dining hall to prevent them attempting to grow outdoor crops and being carried off by snatchers). My fort has a severe bed shortage at the moment, as got two back to back large migrant waves, not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I have about 50 beds (35 in dorms) for 90 dwarves, and the bedroom is fairly high quality. The bed wasn't specifically assigned to the father, he self-assigned by sleeping in it when I got it set up and marked as a bedroom. Since I saw nothing on either the Bed or the Children page about it, figured I'd mention it, in case anyone feels it should be included on the wiki. Gatherer818 05:01, 30 August 2012 (UTC)
Food hauling
Spotted a child with a "Store Item in Barrel" task. Surprisingly, it was not for picking up harvested crops, but rather for plants purchased from the Trade Depot. However, I don't think much should be made of this - none of the other 65 kids in the dungeon picked up any of the other available depot-collection tasks, so I suspect this was just a case of the depot task being combined with the post-harvest job. Tantrum danger?
In my densely poblated fortress, I had a child throw a tantrum immediatly after turning 1. After a bit of investigation, it seems that she was naked, as is normally the case for babies, so when she grew to childhood she got two strong negative thoughts (embarassed because she was without a shirt and embarassed to go uncovered) right away to send her in tantrum unhappyness. Is this a bug? Never happened to me before, maybe it's a warning that I need more artifacts in strategic areas.
