40d:Z-level
Z-level is a term that refers to vertical levels in Dwarf Fortress.
- Suggested Terminology: "L+6" is z-level 6, and "L-13" is z-level -13.
The displayed Z-level is the height above or below ground at the tile you are looking at; notably, moving the cursor in the x-y plane can result in a change of relative height displayed as the ground level changes. Try moving across a cliff from subterranean area to open sky for a good example of this.
There doesn't seem to be a standard range of levels for a given map, on some maps it's -16 to +17, on others it goes as low as -31, maybe deeper. (This would be because of a height difference in the actual site, have a look in the very bottom right and it will display an altitude simulator, eg if you built next to the ocean the beach would be at level 0-1, if you build into the highlands the level may be ~120-140, if you set up high in the mountains it might begin at 160 and have more down-levels)
