The version number of a Dwarf Fortress release indicates the number of completed development components in that release. It is assigned by Tarn Adams and consists of the following five pieces:
- "0" for alpha or beta state, "1" when it is no longer in beta.
- Number of core components completed.
- Number of required components completed.
- Number of bloat components completed.
- A lower-case letter which is increased by one alphabetically for each bug-fix release of a version.
The first four pieces are separated by periods.
