Bats are vermin living in chasms in non-freezing biomes. They do not eat your food, but they can cause unhappy thoughts to some dwarves. They can appear in swarms, so if you have cats, be prepared for a gigantic pile of bat remains. Disturbed swarms can sometimes show up in your fortress' history.
