v0.31:Soap
This article is about an older version of DF. |
This feature has one or more outstanding bugs. Please view the Bugs section for details. |
Soap is used by dwarves for both personal cleaning and health care.
Soap is made by combining either Template:L and Template:L, or lye and Template:L, in a Template:L. One unit of tallow/oil plus one unit of lye creates a single bar of soap.
Lye in Template:L can be used; lye in buckets that has not yet been transferred into a barrel may not be usable (see the Bugs section).
Dwarves do not require soap to clean contaminants such as mud and blood from themselves, and instead will use murky pools, artificial pools of water, brooks, or a Template:L. It is possible to construct bath-houses (rooms containing pools of water, a soap stockpile, and perhaps a few nice statues) so dwarves living deep underground need not venture to dangerous cave pools or surface brooks to clean off a little mud or bloodstain. For cleaning wounds and preventing infection after Template:L, however, Template:Ls should be kept stocked with a small amount of soap.
Soap can be stored in a bars/block stockpile.
Bugs
- Note that the dreaded "[animal] cancels clean self:Area inaccessible." message-spam stems from animals trying to clean themselves with soap, typically by putting it in their mouth. Sadly the only remedy seems to be to not produce soap, except for the hospital; soap stored there is safe from animals. Another workaround might be to only have soap in areas separated from animals by doors, but it can be difficult to keep animals out without keeping them caged. Temporarily forbidding all soap bars through the stock menu seems to stop the madness and the culprits in question will wash themselves at a well or pool.
- Now also occurs with dwarves. Bug:1023 Again, the remedy is to forbid soap until your dwarves clean themselves without soap. Another remedy is to place any loose bars of soap behind a body of shallow water, which will force a creature to become clean on its way to the soap. Soap that is stored in a Template:L will not exhibit this problem, so the ultimate remedy may be to add more chests to your hospital so all your soap can be stored there.
- Lye that is in buckets may be used in 0.31.19. It is generally accepted that lye in buckets won't work in any older releases.
- Lye that is in a bucket that also contains some other substance, such as water, is unusable. Suggested workarounds include:
- Wait for a caravan, then mark the bucket to be brought to the depot, and cancel it along the way. Unknown whether this works in the current release.
- Order an animal to be Template:L, and dwarves will dump out whatever's in the bucket before using it for milking. This does not work in 0.31.19.
- Lye barrels that are in a stockpile cannot be used in 0.31.19. The barrels must be removed from the stockpile. Since lye is allowed by default in food stockpiles, this will require a workaround in almost all forts.
