Construction

A construction is an artificial structure that serves as neither furniture nor a workshop. Typical constructions provide shelter, provide accessibility to terrain, or restrict accessibility from terrain.

Simple constructions include walls, floors, stairs, ramps and bridges and can be made from wood or stone. More advanced constructions may have several prerequisites needing specific materials, workshops and skilled dwarves. For example screw pumps, windmills and gear assemblies need engineers/mechanics, and stone and wood constructions need the mason and carpenter respectively (metal constructions can be thrown up by anyone). All constructions can be deconstructed. Designated constructions can be removed using the designations menu. Other constructions can be destroyed by accessing their properties using t or q and x removing the construction.

Strange behavior

Once a constructed wall or floor is built, then removed, the remaining floor changes to reflect the material that was originally used in the construction. For instance, if you were to build a dolomite wall on a magnetite floor, then removed the dolomite wall construction, the floor would morph into a dolomite floor.
