Fire men seems to come out of the same places that imps do, but they are a little bolder and can go out a ways past the lava vent.
To stop fire men from attacking your dwarfs build a mote around the lava vent. If you can fill it with water from a river or a brook.
After you have made a a mote the firemen should stop atacking
