They must be built from fire-safe materials. Magma furnaces have to be built from magma-safe materials and must have magma accessible from below one of the 8 boundary tiles; this can be accomplished by digging a channel. To start a task at a furnace, press q and move the cursor near to it.

Smelter

Sand

Sand is needed to make glass, it is stored in bags.

Getting sand requires that you first set up a zone, i, and placing the zone over an area that is considered sand by the game (i.e. desert, though other sandy biomes exist) and setting it as a sand collection zone, s. Note: not every region will have sand and as of current, I don't know of any other way to get it.
