The Hammerer is the executioner of your fortress. If your fortress does not have enough cages or restraints set to be used by justice or the crime is heinous enough, (s)he will proceed to hammerings. In the older versions, various crimes were worth different numbers of hammer strikes, but in the recent versions this has not been verified.

Now, as the baron comes in with all his smiles and nods, behind him is a big, sweaty bug eyed man known as the hammerer. The hammerer does not care about petty things like love or dwarfbucks because inside him broods a carnal urge to bash another dwarf's 'ed in and bathe in 'is blood. Some say he was raised by goblins, others say he hit 'is 'ed when he was a baby. Whatever the reason, the hammerer is a killer. The baron, noticing that such a wrathful thing could be potentially powerful, tried to tame it to dispense "justice". The baron thought he succeed but really, he failed in more ways he could imagine. The hammerer's only wish in life is to bash everything's 'ed in, now starting with your legendary dwarves.

Note that it is possible to greatly reduce the damage inflicted on his victims by marking his hammer for dumping. This causes him to dispense justice bare-handed instead, greatly reducing unnecessary deaths. However, it will also make him very unhappy. Another option is to recruit the dwarf facing punishment and assign him to wear armor as a means of limiting the damage.
