The Magma Smelter functions exactly like a normal Smelter, but requires no fuel (charcoal or coke) to smelt.

A Magma Smelter needs to be made of fire-safe materials, and needs to be placed with at least one of the 8 outer tiles of the smelter one z-level directly above a depth 4 (or higher) magma flow. The circle at on the top tile of the smelter will turn red when there is sufficient magma, or grey if there is insufficient magma. Note that the magma needs to be connected to the main magma flow, or it will cool down and turn into obsidian.
