If your fortress is above ground, or exists in a location without rock, ropes or bags sewn with images can be a way of recording your fortresses history instead of detailing. When Built as Restraints(or Containers, for bags), Dwarves can admire them, so they can function as makeshift Tapestries(until they are added in a future version)

A restraint is a chain, rope or cage which is used to restrain a dwarf or other creature. Each type of restraint does its own thing. For example, the chain or rope can be used to keep a wardog near the front door, while the cage can be used as a jail for a rowdy dwarf.

If your fortress is above ground, or exists in a location without rock, ropes or bags sewn with images can be a way of recording your fortresses history instead of detailing. When Built as Restraints(or Containers, for bags), Dwarves can admire them, so they can function as makeshift Tapestries(until they are added in a future version)
