Z-level is a term that refers to vertical levels in Dwarf Fortress.
The range is +17 (highest) to -16 (lowest).

  • Suggested Terminology: "L+6" is z-level 6, and "L-13" is z-level -13.

The displayed Z-level is the height above or below ground at the tile you are looking at; notably, moving the cursor in the x-y plane can result in a change of relative height displayed as the ground level changes. Try moving across a cliff from subterranean area to open sky for a good example of this.
