For those who are as confused as I was - you can place multiple notes. Notes icons are only displayed on the map when you are in the Notes menu. The closest note will be indicated in the menu. Station squad - The squad will congregate around the point you define. This is overridden if they have a patrol route.

This can be verified in .40d by setting a patrol route that cannot be followed like in black space, (you :will know when the squad wont move.)
Set a station point. squad doesn't move.
Remove patrol route. squad moves to station.
