I had just started a new game and saw there was a chasm on the map with a few skeletal ratmen, naked mole dogs and one skeletal troll. Once again, i had just started out, so my only means of fighting these monsters was with recruits (wrestlers) and they seemed to kill that troll pretty fast. I only have a couple deaths but now the troll is dead. Am i super lucky or are trolls less tough then they are supposed to be?

:There's always a good bit of chance in fighting any enemy. I've had Dwarves die to a random horse that wandered into my fortress, actually, I think I lost 3 dwarves that way, even after recruiting my entire fortress to attack it. This was in a fortress of a good 40 people, and I even had a strong military who lost 2 of their dwarves at first before I sent more to attack. In adventurer mode I've been killed on the first hit of a Troll several times, and I've also had a few battles with them where we stood there doing nothing for 15 minutes until one of us finally got a lucky hit in. But, I've also had a good number of fights where with my adventurer alone and a hefty hammer I've killed them straight up. Never tried fighting them in fortress mode, but I assume no major difference, except your losses will be more likely. You lost some dwarves, right? If so, that shows they're still strong. Now imagine it this way, you have a military of 1 recruit in your fortress and your other 6 dwarves are out working, suddenly your fisherdwarf is maimed by a Troll without notice, you quickly send your recruit to do battle with this Troll, but in your haste forgot to call back your woodcutter who is ripped to shreds by the mighty Troll. Your recruit gets there, and having been training for the past few seasons feels he is ready for anything. He pulls out his hammer and charges with fury at this vile Troll. A slow, but bloody, battle ensues and the Troll emerges the victor, but has suffered grave wounds and bleeds to death on his way to your fortress. Was that an easy battle? Yes and no. Could the recruit have killed the Troll had the other two dwarves not fought it? Maybe, maybe not, it's all random. But in the end, you still lost 2, maybe 3, dwarves to a Troll. Random.
