After saddling his mule, Dorkin strapped Kogan into his armor and helped him mount his steed.  The squire bid Kogan farewell.  No one was insane enough to join him on his hopeless quest for revenge.

The world had been on fire and the universe was filled with embers and ash.  Most deities blamed the meddling dwarves for the cataclysm.  Deep in the mountain fortress the dwarven monks toiled over the arcane machine, a device that would count down the days until the end of the world.  Its gears and mechanisms were strung together in such a complex way that even Trigonometra, the wisest of the goddesses, couldn't predict what the machine would do next.

“We must turn it off,” said Brother Glorm.  “Holy Apexus has refused to mount the sun chariot.”

“The gods cannot hold the world hostage,” said Brother Famba.  “We will work in darkness.  What, after all, does it matter here, under the ground?”

“The god below, Nadir, also has his misgivings,” said Glorm.

“We will deal with the god of death when the time comes,” said Famba.

Having nothing to say to that, Glorm just stood back and watched the machine grind away.  Famba adjusted the settings and stood back with Glorm to watch.  There was a horrible screeching sound and the machine ground to a halt.  Famba ran to where the output was written mechanically on a scroll.  It wasn't good news.

“We have three days,” said Famba.

“Tell me,” asked Sir Sula, “how can you count the days left on Earth when the sun refuses to rise?”

“You aren't listening,” shouted Brother Famba.  “We have to get far away from here!”

The castle guard was on alert since Apexus had not appeared in the sky.  They stared out over the battlements and into the darkness.  The night looked back. There was a sea of night creatures waiting outside the dwarf fortress.  Sula was summoned from the library.  Brother Famba followed him, eager to see how the world would end.

“Is there any hope at all?” asked Sula.

“Call for the riding birds,” said Famba.  “We still might be able to get the princess to safety.”
