:Not to be confused with sloths

Sloth bears are rare solitary creatures that raid your food and drink stockpiles who may be found in tropical forests. They are the smallest species of bear in the game, though they're still nearly twice the weight of a dwarf and can make quick work of an unarmed civilian. No more than three sloth bears will inhabit a given surrounding before they become extinct. Unlike other species of bear, sloth bears do appear during the winter season. An infant sloth bear is called a cub.
+
The sloth bear is a medium sized mammal found in tropical forests. Despite its name and some similar features, they are not related to sloths. They are related to bears, though they are smaller than most other bear species, being only half the size of a grizzly bear when fully grown.

Sloth bears can be captured in cage traps and trained into fairly valuable exotic pets. This makes them a fairly decent option for a highly-rewarding breeding program: sloth bear parts are worth twice as much as those of more domestic animals. However, unlike grizzly bears, sloth bears cannot be trained for hunting or war.
+
Wild sloth bears can be attracted to a Fortress by food or drink, like other bears they will guzzle down any of it they can find unguarded. They can be dangerous with biting and scratching attacks, so armored dwarves are recommended to repel sloth bears. This behavior makes them easy to capture, however: using a cage trap or six around otherwise unguarded food stockpiles when sloth bears are in the area will usually net you some of them.

Some dwarves like sloth bears for their large floppy ears.
+
Sloth bears can be tamed, but not trained for hunting or war. They have an adequate pet value and can make good protection pets for dwarves of medium importance. Sloth bears do not produce milk or wool, but they have good meat returns for their size (oddly enough, nearly the same as the twice-as-big grizzly bears), and as they do not have the Grazer attribute they can be pastured in areas without grass. Additionally, sloth bear yields have a 2x value multiplier and only take one year to grow to adulthood, which all together makes them a reasonable base for a meat industry in fortresses where they can be found. A sloth bear is comparable to a black bear.
