The glorious autumn cleaning of Okirlogem, class of 213!

The cage traps worked a little too well... Had to find somewhere separate to put all the goblins! Finally managed to clean out all the cages and give my military a workout when the caravan from the Mountainhomes stopped by...

17th of Granite, 214 (Early Spring) The aftermath of a siege

A tragedy occurred today. After his squad received heavy losses during a goblin siege, Marksdwarf Amost Melbilelis Arbostlorbam went insane and began firing on his fellow dwarves on the storage level. Thankfully the rest of the military was still nearby and they were able to subdue him after a brief but furious struggle. Civilian casualties were minimal; only one dwarf was killed and two injured. One, a child, received light injuries and one of our miners received an arrow in the leg. We expect they will recover quickly. It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing of our fellow Amost Melbilelis Arbostlorbam. He was a good dwarf who worked diligently to protect our home, and he will be buried with honour. 20th of Granite, 214 (Early Spring) The aftermath of the aftermath

Only a few days have passed since Amost's death and the repercussions are still being felt. His squadmates have been suffering the most.

Since his death, Urist Kodgidthur threw a tantrum and was stuck down and Mosus Lunineth has simply gone insane and now wanders the fortress, babbling madly. This leaves Urdim Tekkud as the sole remaining member of The Arches of Carnage. One can only wonder how long it will be until she too succumbs to madness.

I have moved her into one of the other squads, The Geared Rifts, in the hope that she can recover through her grief with the support of her fellows, but at the moment her chances seem bleak.

10th Slate, 214. (Mid-Spring) Commentary on a Countess

The Countess just gave birth to another girl. What is this, her eighth child? I swear, that woman has nothing better to do with her time.

Countess's children.JPG

I was wrong, she has *ten*. And a cat, the vile creatures. The cats, I mean.

21st of Slate, 214 (Mid-Spring) Leatherworking mood

When I first heard one of our dwarves had been taken by a strange mood, I was worried. But, thank Osram, is wasn't another thrice-damned possession! I swear, this places is haunted. Turns out it was just a leatherworker, but all told I'm not complaining as long as he's not possessed. He quickly took over a workshop and immediately sprang to work.

And... I just received news that Urist Kodgidthur, the last remaining marksdwarf, went stark raving mad. Poor lass. I only hope she doesn't suffer long.

26th of Slate (Mid-Spring) Wait, what?

Lolwhut.PNG

Well, I can honestly say I've never heard that one before. o.0

1st of Felsite, 214 (Late-Spring) Ushat's artifact

The first day of the new month and I get a message saying our leatherworker has completed his secret construction! I hurried over to his workshop to find....

Ushat.PNG

While I shouldn't have expected more, I almost feel like this is some sort of elaborate prank call. I'll give *you* shat... Nevertheless, I checked it out.

Ushat's artifact.PNG

Huh. It has us on it, back from when we just started this little place. Heh, that brings back memories. Okay, so maybe it's not *all* bad...

16th Hematite, 214 (Early Summer) The Siege

Well, that'll teach me to wish for some interesting times. Well, okay, it won't. Anyway. The first victim was claimed in short order, poor Olon Libashdum.

Seige 214.PNG

One of our legendary champions, responsible for the death of no less than forty two goblins, was shot and killed. What she was doing out there alone in the first place is anyone's guess, but damn, I wish I'd had time to build a tomb to honour her.

Godamnit! Now some of my champions have mysteriously broken ranks and charged the enemy, heedless of my orders!

3againstananrmy.PNG

Amazingly, one of them managed to survive their headlong rush into doom. Bellowing savage war cries, their fellows emerged from the depths to do battle with the beasts that had slain their comrades, again against my orders. Somehow, amazingly, they managed to break the back of the army however, and drive the enemy survivors back in a rout.

Though they did so foolishly, they will be commended for their actions. Those that have fallen will be buried with honour, but it grieves me to know that those that fell today will not receive the entombment they deserve. I will make it my highest priority to make sure future soldiers will be able to be buried in a more fitting manner.

5th Galena, 214 (Late Summer) Rebuilding an army

Urdim Tekkud died of thirst today.

Our military lies in shambles. recruiting will begin immediately, drafting dwarves from non-essential positions of the fortress, starting with the most able-bodied. Work on tombs for our most noble of dwarves, the military who give their lives to protect us, is progressing well. I discovered today that the tomb I had created some time ago for one of our grandest of champions had been filled with her body, presumably soon after the siege. Also present, in the small casket to one side for that purpose was the body of her lover, a member of the fortress guard who-I hope-died fighting alongside her.

I'd hoped to take a picture of the lavish tomb I'd created for her, but someone's scattered clothing all through it. I'll have the offending items dumped, then get an image.

Also I recently discovered that, uh, one of our engravers died from thirst, which was actually my fault. >.> He'd taken to recuperate from a wound in a bed I was using for some masons to sleep in when I locked them in to make native gold blocks, and may have forgotten about him when the siege started. I'm hoping it won't cause too many problems... <.<

16th Sandstone, 214 (Mid-Autumn) Who is Datan Crystalassaults?

Well, the caravans have been and gone. It was another decent trading year with the Mountainhomes.

Good news again, however! The military are progressing well. I started them out on wrestling, and I am now slowly training them up in other weapon disciplines. In addition to which, Lor Imkethathel, one of our metalsmiths was taken by a mood and made a artifact mini-forge. It has a couple of pictures of a dwarf called "Datan Crystalassaults", which I've seen on a few artifacts now. I don't know who the fellow is, either. Haven't been able to figure it out.

The elven siege of 215

I actually honestly wasn't sure what was going on at first, but suddenly, ninjas! Hundreds of them!

Oh god.JPG

Is it bad that I'm actually excited for my first scrap against the elves? These bastards have gotten inside my first line of defenses, but it's time to unleash some fury... I had the lever pulled, blocking off their escape while I mobilized the military. It seems my previous cross training to keep the civilians in jobs and to train up for military duty was a wise move, with my wrestlers quickly making mincemeat of theirs.

Oh yeah!.JPG

...

Well, in the end, that went surprisingly easily. I'll keep the military on guard though, just in case something else pops up...

25th of Felsite 215 Erm...

Whoops.JPG Whoops. Cutting corners in deconstruction has led to my first casualty. On an unrelated note, the Countess has had *another* child! This woman really has nothing better to do with her time, does she?

14th of Hematite, 215, (Early Summer) The merchant blockade

Human caravans, yay! We've needed some wood. But ruh-roh!

Merchant seige.JPG

Got the military out there quick-smart (seems I left them sitting around since the elven siege, whoops) and hopefully I'll be able to catch them before they scare off the caravans. Oh, and there's a kid in the workshop demanding shells, poor bastard. Needing shell around here is more or less a death sentence. I need to start forbidding the stuff when it's not needed, really.

27th of Hematite (Early Summer) Operation Goldplate

The siege was ended relatively bloodlessly. On our side of course. We senselessly slaughtered the other guys, ho ho ho. Merchants are unpacking happily while I get my latest project started. I decided, what *am* I going to do with all of this gold we have just lying around? Our crafts and food are more valuable. We can't make it into weapons or armour (only because we're out of coke, sigh, and even if we could steel would be better) we can't eat it, but it *does* look pretty.... And it was only after finishing gold-plating Olan Zulash's tomb that I had the brilliant idea to wow merchants and immigrants by covering my entire fortress with gold. Not from top to bottom, of course, just the bits foreigners will see, like the entire outside rock areas and the trading station. You can see here the start we've made. Gold floors with walls soon to go up; once I'm ready I'll rip up that bridge and make *that* out of gold too, and pull up the traps and put gold underneath all of those, then replace them. It'll be fun! Operatrion goldplate.JPG
