Wood industry
The wood industry is concerned with the growth and cutting down of trees to yield logs, which can then be processed into furniture at a carpenter's workshop and trade goods at a craftsdwarf's workshop. Some wood is absolutely required in any fortress, as it is the only way to build beds and the cheapest way to build bins; additionally it is required to make machine component for the transfer of power, siege engines, and ash for fuel. Altogether the wood industry is a necessity in any fortress, and makes embarking in any biome without trees (or too dangerous to get them) more fun. If you want to use wood on a large scale, or keep your woodcutters inside at all times, you will want to establish a tree farm.

In most fortresses, the one resource that is near inexhaustible is stone. Mining out any rock tile produces a stone, which can then be used as input for the stone industry. The stone industry is much like the wood industry in that it produces low-value furniture (but not beds) and similar objects, as well as rock crafts at a craftsdwarf's workshop. It has a virtually inexhaustible supply of material, making generating wealth with rock crafts a very simple and potentially lucrative option.
