Missing body parts no longer produce pain, so a completely severed limb or digit will cause no pain. Without breaking a bone, a creature would have to have three layers bruised on about ten different body parts, or three layers broken on about four, to collapse from pain (and edged weapons often damage sensory nerves, reducing pain).
