This article is about an older version of DF.

Climate in Dwarf Fortress is a temperature rating only; actual ground cover is called a Template:L. In order from hottest to coldest, they are:

Note: If temperature is turned off, none of the mentioned effects will occur.

Scorching

Temperature: +++

Availability of water: Any existing Template:L will dry up immediately. Template:Ls are unaffected.

When embarking in this Region: If no river or Template:L is available, it is hard to survive in this climate. Your only chance is to find a cave with water (very likely in the latest version). Exposed Template:L and Template:L may die because of the heat.

Hot

Temperature: ++

Availability of water: In dry biomes, Template:L may evaporate during dry Template:Ls (usually Template:L). But they can be refilled by Template:L. Template:Ls are unaffected.

When embarking in this Region: If you lack a Template:L, be sure to dig out a Template:L before summer is upon you.

Warm

Temperature: +

Availability of water: Any water source can be used during the whole year. This makes it the easiest climate to embark on.

When embarking in this Region: Nothing to consider (regarding the climate).

Temperate

Temperature: -

Availability of water: Surface pools and rivers will freeze for part of the year. The length of freeze varies: They may start out frozen, thaw sometime during Template:L, and remain liquid until Template:L, or they may start out liquid and freeze for only a month or so in winter.

When embarking in this Region: If you lack a Template:L, can dig out a Template:L in the non freezing seasons. You can also use a source of heat (such as Template:L) to obtain liquid Template:L.

Cold

Temperature: --

Availability of water: Surface pools and rivers are usually frozen but can thaw for a few months in each year.

When embarking in this Region: The same measures like in temperate biomes can be taken.

Freezing

Temperature: ---

Availability of water: Surface pools and rivers remain frozen throughout the year in a majority of maps.

When embarking in this Region: You must use a source of heat (Template:L) to obtain liquid Template:L. Glacial ice can also be molten. Underground sources of water are also possible to use. Exposed Template:L and livestock may quickly freeze to death.
