:Actually I can testify for this.  Once I was in a town sleeping, but not in a building and they attacked.  I moved about ten spaces and once I was a couple spaces away from the wall of a building, it said "The cackling fades away." I've noticed, and I'm adding that to the article: you must be close to civilization for them to appear. --AddledAbalone 21:55, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

Screw that close to civ stuff, I was atleast 5 tiles on the world map, not travel map, from the nearest town or whatever and they spawned suddenly, unless there are also towns that aren't on the map before you heard about them or found them. Would make few sense though with a 90% uncovered map at starting... ~ BloodyRain2k, 4th April 2011

"The only way to stop their attacks is by running through a critical distance somewhere near a town/hamlet,"

I ran through one, didn't ward them off. Also, you can enter a lair(where whatever lives inside it is dead) to escape from them, such as you would a building(Just thought I'd point that out.)
Also brings me to the next point that sleeping inside of a cleared lair can keep your safe from bogeymen. --ANormalUsername 23:43, 3 February 2011 (UTC)

Anyone else notice that bogeymen don't attack you in badlands or deserts etc. ? --Eepkeep 13:14, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
