'''Archery targets''' are used to create Archery Ranges, which are used to train [[Soldier#Marksdwarves|Marksdwarves]]. They can be built from [[wood]], which requires [[carpentry]]; [[stone]] or [[glass|glass blocks]], which requires [[masonry]]; or [[metal]], which requires [[metalcrafting]]. They can also be built from [[block|blocks]] made from the above materials.

==Making an Archery Range==

To make an Archery Range, 
#{{k|b}}uild one or more {{k|A}}rchery targets in a room/area
#{{k|q}}uery a constructed archery target and make a {{k|r}}oom
#Set the size with {{k|+}}/{{k|-}} to determine how far from the target your archers will stand
#Set the shooting direction with {{k|w}}{{k|a}}{{k|s}}{{k|d}}
#Assign the range to the desired [[squads]]. Squads can then be set to {{k|s}}leep or {{k|t}}rain there, as well as store their {{K|i}}ndividual or s{{k|q}}uad equipment, much like a [[barracks]]. 

The [[room]] can then be used by military dwarves who have '''''no order''''' (i.e. they're set to inactive) in their [[schedule]] this month, in order  to train ranged [[weapon]] [[skills]]. Since [[bolts]] are being used up by this training, it may be a good idea to [[equipment|set]] the dwarves to only use [[bone]] or [[wood|wooden]] bolts when training, however this can cause [[#Bugs|problems]].

Unlike other [[room]]s, archery ranges only include the archery target from which they were defined - if you have multiple targets in one area, '''each one''' must be designated as its own archery range, even if this causes them to overlap.

==Notes==
*The size of the room (range) must be such that the marksdwarf is not standing adjacent to the target.
*If you have a room underneath your archery range, you can channel the area behind the target to save bolts (falling bolts don't break), but if you completely channel targets out, recruits will stop training as they require a straight walkable path to the target. A floor grate will NOT work.
*Experience is granted per shot, not per target hit.
*Only one soldier can use an archery target at a time.
*Marksdwarves will only practice at an archery range if their [[quiver]]s contain ammunition which is permitted for training - if they are fully stocked up on combat-only ammo and have no room for anything else, then they will never practice.
*Marksdwarves do not spend all of their free time performing archery practice - during downtime, they will complain that they "cannot follow orders". Assigning marksdwarves to a [[barracks]] will allow them to use this spare time to perform combat drills, though said drills can potentially cut into archery practice.

==Bugs==
*Marksdwarves have trouble switching between "training" and "combat" ammo.{{Bug|4530}} They will fill their quiver with one kind of ammo, then refuse to use it for the other purpose (so those that practice will be unable to fire in combat, and vice versa). A workaround is to not use ammo restrictions, but this wastes many valuable bolts. A workaround for ''that'' problem is to use a different [[DF2012:Stupid_dwarf_trick#Bolt_Splitting_Operation|practice arrangement]].
